Lincoln

On this day, November 6th, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States. Exactly one year later, Jefferson Davis was elected president of the Confederacy. Lincoln didn’t get much of a honeymoon period, did he? Actually, secession was already brewing at the time of the election, and he addressed it in his inaugural address – “Plainly, the central idea of secession, is the essence of anarchy.”

But, in honor of the 155th anniversary of Lincoln’s inauguration, I leave you with this 1854 quote:

“The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves — in their separate, and individual capacities.”

Enjoy the weekend! And for my fellow NaNo participants – I hope your word counts are higher than mine!
