On this day, in 1809, the future 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, was born. I thought that made it a fitting time to share this 1854 quote of Lincoln’s on the purpose of government:

“The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves — in their separate, and individual capacities.”
